Daveida 'Candy' Jacobs

President

Candy Jacobs was introduced to boxing by her late father, legendary boxing trainer Dave Jacobs after he started a boxing program at the Palmer Park Recreation Center that cultivated the talents of many young boys and men in the community but most famously of Olympic Gold Medalist and World Champion Sugar Ray Leonard. If the adage, "you are a product of your environment," is true, then it is understandable why she breathes boxing. In 1998, she became an amateur boxing official with the Potomac Valley Association, USA Boxing, Inc. ("PVA"). Ms. Jacobs was not one to rely on the doors to open by her last name alone. She started humbly, attending weigh-ins, observing the assembly of the boxing ring, and studying proper glove lacing to statistician count methods and referee calls. Throughout her tenure with PVA, Ms. Jacobs held several Board of Director positions, from Junior Olympic Chairperson to Secretary to President. By embracing her multitasking spirit, she was also a member of both the Judicial and Scholarship Committees for USA Boxing Inc. for two years during that same period.

PVA holds many memories and accomplishments for Ms. Jacobs. Under her leadership, PVA continuously received nationwide recognition and accolades. They were awarded the "Outstanding Local Boxing Committee" presented by USA Boxing, Inc., all four years she was President. They launched the acclaimed "Gloves Not Guns" program with a $10,000.00 grant sponsored by the United States Olympic Committee. The reputation for successful boxing events led Ms. Jacobs to serve as the liaison for countless 501(c)3 organizations, such as the Belfast-Beltway Boxing Project, an international exchange program for at-risk youth from Washington, DC, and Belfast, Ireland, for boxing events in each hosting country, the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business Fight Night fall black-tie affair at the historic Howard Theatre to help to accelerate research to find a cure for Castleman Disease, the Boone Warrior Fight Night fundraiser at George Washington University to support the all military EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal, the disarming and disposal of bombs) Warriors, and working with Haymakers for Hope, a Boston based organization for their Washington, DC debut event at The Anthem on the Potomac River in Southwest DC to Knock Out Cancer with HOGO's Vice-President, Tamara McKinney.

Candy continues to break ground locally and internationally in the boxing world. Not only currently serving as the Vice-President of the prestigious Washington DC Boxing Hall of Fame organization, she earned her place as a member and was inducted in 2011. This induction further memorialized the Jacobs name once again. Ms. Jacobs and her father are the only father/daughter inductees to date. She is among a concise list of women to hold the inductee honor and an even shorter list to have held the Vice- President position.

Ms. Jacobs is the mother of one daughter. Still, she lives in Palmer Park, giving to the community and promoting amateur boxing events in honor of her father every summer in Palmer Park, MD.

Her volunteer hours rendered her a recipient of three Presidential Volunteer Service Awards and the induction into the Washington DC Boxing Hall of Fame.  In 2018, she partnered with other women in creating the non-profit organization, “Heels Off Gloves On Boxing Foundation”. The foundation was created to help individuals and other organizations in financial hardship, raise funds for their various causes, while giving boxers the experience and support they need to excel in and out of the ring.

Inspired to educate herself on issues related to mass incarceration and elected community leaders, she collaborated with like-minded citizens in her community and became the Co-Founder of Concerned Citizens for Bail Reform (CC4BR). CC4BR is a grassroots organization dedicated to building positive relationships and addressing various issues which impact mass incarceration. Tamara has worked to bridge the gap between the community and law enforcement.  She has planned events of engagement such as her community’s first block party, neighborhood movie nights in the park and food and clothing giveaways for those in need.  These events afforded children, parents, and police the opportunity to engage in a positive manner which improves community environment for all.
